The granite rock, after residing for a time in back of the brick wall that encircled the President's home, was placed southeast of the Education Building in Heritage Oaks Park.
The story goes that the class of '31 had very little money to put toward a gift to honor Professor Mahan - slightly more than enough to engrave the granite. In order to make the gift more meaningful, some class members from the Mable Falls-Fredericksburg area hired a truck to deliver the big granite rock to campus.
