Japan: Roots of Mindfulness (PSY 451)
Mindfulness is a ubiquitous term in Western mental and physical healthcare. The majority of concepts and practices involved are adopted from Japanese Zen Buddhism. This course is designed to provide an immersive exploration of these concepts, through direct practice, in the culture from which they emerged. During this 15-day course, students will explore Zen temples and Shinto shrines in the cities of Kyoto, Nara, and Yamaguchi, and experience their practices firsthand while addressing their application and role in mental and physical well-being. Students interested in exploring the intersection between contemplation and health as well as their own interiority are encouraged to apply. Contact Prof. Aaron Godlaski.
