      Egypt: 5000 years of Transition

Egypt's recent political transition is of monumental significance when placed in the context of 5000 years of authoritarian rule. This 18- day trip will introduce students to Egypt's political development spanning the pharaonic period, centuries of rule by Christian and Muslim conquerors, and the modern military republic. We will spend time in Cairo at sites that include the pyramids and Tahrir Square, travel on a 4-day Nile Cruise tour from Aswan to Luxor to see ancient sites such as Abu Simbil and Valley of the Kings, and visit Sharm el Sheikh in the Sinai peninsula where important diplomatic missions have taken place. Our destinations will highlight the sources of political continuity and change and help us consider the viability of democracy in Egypt. Contact Prof. Dina Badie.
