Argentina/Uruguay: The Other Southern Cone (SPA 271/471or Latin American Studies 220—no Spanish required)
Known as South America’s “two White nations,” Argentina and Uruguay have had a complicated history integrating marginalized groups. Students will spend 18 days studying the Jewish presence in Buenos Aires and the African presence in Colonia del Sacramento and Montevideo. Topics included in this trip are discourses of social identity, memory, popular culture, and place within the nation. The course includes visits to the AMIA building, Gran Templo de Paso (Jewish synagogue), Carnaval, and the Afro-Uruguayan house of culture.
