Sinking Spring is located between Old Centre and the Campus Center. There is a creek called Sinking Spring that is said to have been a resting place for Daniel Boone as he traveled to Ft. Harrod in Harrodsburg, Ky. Sinking Spring was part of the College’s original seven acres (purchased from John Cochran for $400 in March 1819). Centre students and faculty began archeological explorations of the area in 1999. It is possibly the oldest site on campus, an early Indian camp site and possible location of Thomas Harrod’s cabin of 1774-1776.
The area also includes the Ann Elizabeth Rankin Memorial Garden named for and dedicated in May 1972 in memory of Ann Elizabeth Rankin, who accidentally drowned in Alaska during the summer of 1970 following her sophomore year at Centre College.
