A labyrinth walk was built in McDowell Park in 2002. A labyrinth walk is a unique form of “prayer in motion” that involves participants in a metaphor for the spiritual journey. Modeled after the labyrinth set in the floor of Chartres Cathedral in France, the Danville labyrinth is a large circle with a single path that winds back and forth moving alternately toward and away from the center, covering every quadrant, leading ultimately to a central prayer circle. The wide spaces between the turns (the Grace Cathedral variation) allow walkers to stand off the pattern so that others may pass.
The labyrinth walk was sponsored by the Danville Labyrinth Project and built with permission from the Presbyterian Church of Danville.
Thomas A. Spragens Memorial (2007). Thomas A. Spragens, only the fourth Centre president who was not an ordained Presbyterian minister, took office on November 11, 1957, and served the college for 24 years (1957-1981). Only John C. Young (1830-1857) served longer. Spragens, who came to Centre from the presidency of Stephens College, led Centre into an era which elevated the college into a new prosperity and radically altered the face of the campus.
The Centre community lost a dear friend and exceptional leader Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006 with the passing of President Emeritus Thomas A. Spragens.
