The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication building is a a $71 million, six-story state-of-the-art facility, which is closer to more major metropolitan news operations than any journalism school in the country. The building provides students with seven collaborative, digital newsrooms; computer labs; two TV studios and the 141-seat Cronkite Theatre. The university-operated public television station, Eight, Arizona PBS (KAET), is in the same complex.
A 77-watt solar system was installed on the roof of the Cronkite building in December 2011 and includes 322 solar panels. The system generates approximately 122,335-kilowatt hours of electricity annually and reduces greenhouse emissions by 153,000 pounds per year – the carbon equivalent of removing the annual emissions of 15 cars, or planting more than 2,000 trees.
