Started in 1910 and completed in 1911, Cummings Gym was designed by faculty member Litchfield Colton, who taught iron work and mechanical drawing at Stetson University. Constructed in Masonry Vernacular style, the building was the second gym for the university and cost $12,000. It is named for J. Howell Cummings, who was president of the Stetson Hat Co. in Philadelphia at the time and who contributed $6,000 toward the cost of the gym. Construction was supervised by Carl Turnquist, head of the university’s woodworking department.

With the additions of the Edmunds Center in 1974 and the Hollis Center in 1998, Cummings Gym became obsolete as a gym. It has been used in recent years for dance classes and to build theater sets. Plans call for the building to be refurbished as a multipurpose space.
