The Duke Smart House was completed in 2006 and is a 6000-square-foot residence and live-in research laboratory for 10 undergraduates. Overseen by Duke‘s Pratt School of Engineering, the Smart House provides hands-on engineering practice and helps test future residential building technology.

The Smart House was the first LEED™ Platinum certified dormitory in the country. It includes a green roof, a rainwater reclamation system, and 3 kW of solar photovoltaic panels.
The Duke Community Garden, located next to the Home Depot Smart House, provides educational and recreational gardening opportunities to students, faculty, and staff.
