A bust of Benjamin Franklin appears to be looking down at visitors from the pediment of historic Flagler Hall, built in 1902 with funding from railroad baron and Florida developer Henry Flagler. The building is the most elaborate Masonry Vernacular structure on campus and was architect William Charles Hays’ first professional commission. Constructed with hollow tile, the exterior walls are covered with stucco. Flared foundation walls, brick surrounds on the second-story arched window openings and terra-cotta ornamentation are among distinctive features.

Flagler Hall was first known as Science Hall, because Henry Flagler decreed that his name not be associated with the building during his lifetime. The structure originally housed the engineering program and Florida’s first law school. Today it houses departments in the College of Arts and Sciences.
