      1. Elizabeth Hall

Elizabeth Hall is one of the oldest buildings on campus and one of the most important architecturally. The center portion was constructed in 1892, with the asymmetrical north and south wings added in 1897. Elizabeth Hall was the first major building erected on campus by university benefactor and namesake John B. Stetson. He requested that architect George T. Pearson of Philadelphia design the Colonial Revival structure to resemble Independence Hall in Philadelphia. The city was home to Stetson and his wife, Elizabeth, for whom the building is named. Architectural distinctives include the hip roof, dormers, multi-paned double-hung windows, transoms and French doors that open onto a third-floor balcony. The building’s trim and molding details are of terracotta, stone and wood.

Elizabeth Hall features the iconic Stetson University cupola and the 700-seat Lee Chapel performance hall, noted for acoustics and a 2,700-pipe Beckerath organ added in 1961. The organ was the first of its kind installed in an American university. Today, Elizabeth Hall is home to the College of Arts and Sciences and also houses offices and classrooms.
