Opened in 2009, the 2,800-square-foot Marshall and Vera Lea Rinker Environmental Learning Center is an example of how a building can be designed and constructed in balance with the world around it. The Environmental Learning Center features a geothermal system, rainwater collection system and graywater flush operation. Materials used in construction include recycled metal (for the roof) and wood from certified sustainable forests. Native Florida plants are used in the landscaping. Windows are of low-e glass to cut down on glare. The building was awarded LEED Gold status by the U.S. Green Building Council, under its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System.
John and Sheila Rinker, strong supporters of the university, made the lead gift for the center, which is considered an extension of the adjacent Gillespie Museum. The center is home to the Department of Geography and Environmental Science, and is also used by area schoolchildren and local environmental and conservation groups. The student-run Hatter Harvest community garden is located behind the building.
