Philanthropists Jessie Ball duPont and Edward Ball were chief donors to the library building which was completed in 1964. A series of 24 brick arches surround the exterior and serves a dual purpose of decoration and temperature control. The structure’s perforated brick wall balances and reduces the heat which would otherwise be absorbed by the exterior surface. More than 144,000 colonial-style bricks were reproduced for use in the exterior, which also has more than 11,000 square feet of glass. The entire building has more than 50,000 square feet of space. In Operation Booklift, May 7, 1964, students, faculty and staff carried books, periodicals and furniture from the old library space in Sampson Hall to the new building.
duPont-Ball Library is the home of the oldest (1877) Federal depository in Florida, and is also a Florida documents depository. The library houses hundreds of thousands of print books, plus periodicals, electronic resources, special collections and the university archives. Collaboration stations and smart rooms are available for student use.
The library also houses the Writing Center and the Hollis Family Student Success Center. The Writing Center provides free tutoring for all students, staff and faculty. The Hollis Family Student Success Center is a state-of-the-art space focused on centralized support for students, offering tutoring, academic coaching, and time management and testing skills required for graduation and effective career development.
