This 200-acre wooded area features trails to challenge all levels of physical fitness. Combined, the three hikes cover 4.5 miles for exploring the forest, discovering wildlife, and witnessing amazing views overlooking the scenic valley. All trails begin and end at the parking area located behind and above Orvis Activities Center.
Your journey may include viewing deer or occasionally red foxes, but use caution not to disturb the forest inhabitants. No motorized vehicles are permitted without permission of Alfred State. Visitors are reminded to stay on identified trails, to enjoy nature with a buddy for safety, and to carry a cell phone for emergency communication if needed.
Pioneer Fitness Trail
1 mile, 1.6 kilometers
From the parking area, head up the hill following the blue trail identifiers past the water tower for this roundabout route. The trail was created by the heavy equipment operations class of 2016 & 2017 offering a novice to intermediate challenge to trail goers and features fitness stations (balance beam, push-up bar, Monkey bars, Pull-up bars, and a Sit-up bench).
Happy Valley Trail
1.5 miles, 2.4 kilometers
Head north following the green trail signs, traveling over the hill to explore what was originally developed as the Happy Valley Ski Hill. This intermediate to difficult trail offers some significant climbs before returning past the wind turbine and then descending back to the trail’s origination point.
Cross Country Trail
2 miles, 3.2 kilometers
This trail follows the yellow trail identifiers and is designed for running, walking, and cross country skiing. It delivers scenic views and is novice to intermediate in level of difficulty. The Cross Country Trail explores a variety of terrain and provides views of the village, college, and athletic fields.
