The original structure was named for LSU Boyd Professors Richard J. Russell and Henry V. Rowe. In 1994, the newer wing was named for Professor Fred Bowerman Kniffen.
The building is home to the Coastal Studies Institute, the Department of Geology & Geophysics and the Department of Geography & Anthropology.
