Originally constructed as Campus Drive, the road along the southern bank of the Boise River was pedestrianized in the 1970s and is today part of Boise's 25-mile river greenbelt. The greenbelt offers a car-free walking and biking route through campus, and with several access points to the river, students can often be found rafting, swimming, fishing, and relaxing along the river.
The sidewalk along the greenbelt is designed to be pedestrian friendly, so the marked bike lane along Cesar Chavez is specifically for bikes heading towards Capitol Boulevard. Bikes heading east towards Park Center are allowed to use the full lane. Boise State shuttles stop at designated stops along Cesar Chavez, providing convenient mass transit on campus.
