The first campus building purposefully erected for student housing, Dennis M. Burke Hall stands as an icon on campus with its colonial architecture and commanding position overlooking the Fox River. Erected in 1942, the four-story coeducational hall houses second, third and fourth-year students living in either single or double rooms. Burke Hall’s accommodations also include a large, two-stove kitchen, a modern-style chapel and a newly furnished basement lounge. During World War II, Burke Hall housed several hundred United States Army soldiers assigned to St. Norbert for their higher education courses. With 90 percent of the college’s all-male enrollment at that time already called away to military service, the hall’s ability to accommodate so many helped the college prosper and grow in a difficult economy.
